Congrats to UConn for winning its second national championship in four years.
Since the pool began in 2006, we have not seen a higher percentage of upsets or a higher total possible points with perfect picks. This year saw 36.5% of the games where the underdog defeated the favorite (2006 was 33.3%) and perfect picks would net you 303 points (2006 was 293). By comparison, 2007 was the low point where only 17.5% of the games were upsets and total possible points were 218.
Also congratulations to David Weinstein. He moves into the top five in all time pool pick percentages with his performance this year.
All monies have been paid out and all results have been finalized. Thanks to everyone for playing and paying on time. We'll see you next year!

It's All Over!
Final four weekend saw the upsets continue.
First, UConn upset #1 Florida for the second time this season. In Saturday's finale, Kentucky upset Wisconsin to have two underdogs play for the National Championship.
Of course, the pool is over with these two teams playing each other.
Congratulations to David Weinstein, Bob Hemphill and IKickUButt2 (Fred DePalm) for taking the top three prizes. By the time you read this the prize money will have been paid out.
This is the first time in pool history where no one picked either team that played in the championship and where the pool results were decided at the end of the semifinal round on Saturday. This is only the second time in pool history where no one picked the tournament champion.
As the upsets continue, the percentage of upsets in the tournament has gone to 37% (23/62) - this might be the highest upset percentage of all time.
Perfect picks thus far would have netted you a whopping 271 points.
I will update with the final stats tomorrow after the game.

Bring on the Final Four
Catching up on results.
Friday saw upsets in three of four games (Michigan St, Kentucky, UConn) with Michigan being the only favorite team that won.
David Weinstein was the only one to cash in on Kentucky's win (8 points), IKickUButt and Robert Rubin both cashed in on UConn (8 points), but all the brackets were evenly split between Virginia and Michigan St with half the brackets cashing in on the 7 points with Michigan St in that game.
Saturday saw Dayton's glass slipper break, losing to Florida, and the slight dog Wisconsin take out #1 Arizona in a close game. Seven brackets cashed in on the 9 points brought home by the Badgers.
After Saturday's result, last place was decided. Noel Van Nyhuis' points gauge turned completely red with only 47 points, locking up last place. Noel, you can take consolation in the fact that you had one of the highest point totals of all time in the pool with your bracket in 2009 - and the fact that you're getting your $20 back!
Sunday set the Final Four with two more upsets and decided who's left in contention for one of the top three spots.
UConn took out Michigan St providing 11 points to..no one, turning the points gauge in 7 brackets red and leaving only two of those brackets with a chance at any money.
The other game saw Kentucky taking down Michigan with 14 points again going unclaimed.
With all of this action, the percentage of upsets in the tournament has jumped to 35% (21/60) - one of the highest upset percentages in some time.
Perfect picks thus far would have netted you 227 points.
There is a new report available - Tournament Scenarios which shows how everyone will finish in each of the possible 8 scenarios remaining.
Congratulations to Bob Hemphill - he has a guaranteed spot in the money with his bracket finishing no worst than third and will win it all if Florida beats Kentucky.
Congrats also to Robert Rubin and David Weinstein. Their brackets have a shot of finishing in the money in 6 of the 8 remaining tournament scenarios.
David will finish in first unless Florida wins the tournament, in which case he will finish in 6th place as his points gauge has turned red and he will get no more points in the tournament. If Florida defeats Wisconsin, Robert will finish in first.
Three other brackets have a shot at finishing in the money as well - IKickUButt2 (in 2 out of 8 scenarios), Brian Miller and Bob Kane (each in 1 out of 8 scenarios.)
Other interesting things to note: The President's bracket will finish no better than 11th, the Tournament Committee will finish no better than 13th and the RPI bracket will finish no better than 15th
Thanks everyone for playing. Will send another update after Saturday's games. |
